ML Mono

Monocular reading glasses for very high powers

ML Mono is a specially adapted reading solution for situations where binocular vision is not possible or does not provide a functional reading experience. The glasses are designed for people who require very strong magnification – typically powers above +5.0 D – and who use only one eye for reading.

Monocular reading solution for very high powers

In ML Mono, one lens has the high reading power, whilst the other is either a plano lens or an occluded lens. This solution is intended for people who have functional vision in only one eye, or when the required addition is so high that binocular vision cannot be achieved, even with the help of a convergence prism.

When is ML Mono used?

The limit varies from person to person, but it is often around a reading distance of 8–12 cm. For reading distances shorter than 10 cm, a monocular solution should always be considered.

When one eye is not used

It is not uncommon for people with visual impairment to have significantly better vision in one eye than the other. The weaker eye may be so limited that, in practice, it does not contribute to reading. In such cases, it may be beneficial to block out the weaker eye using an occlusion.

An occlusion lens blocks most of the image but still allows light to pass through, which often provides a more comfortable experience than seeing two competing images. If necessary, a more opaque occlusion can also be used.
